The type of loudspeaker often referred to as "compact floorstander" has become popular in recent years as it can, if designed properly, offer a generosity of sound close to that of a large loudspeaker whilst having a footprint no bigger than that of a small, stand-mounted model. The Super Pavarotti is a loudspeaker designed for being used both as an hi-fi and home theater loudspeaker, with shielded units to avoid colour fringing when installed near television sets. With any loudspeaker design, the key to achieving success depends on the application of sound basic principles coupled with the use of good quality materials in all aspects of the construction. This means first and foremost that the cabinet must be made as inert as possible, since resonance is the number one enemy of the designer. Like all the models in the Opera range, the Super Pavarotti's cabinet is made from solid hardwood, fully interlocked and braced in the traditional furniture-making manner. The use of thick solid panels ensures maximum structural rigidity and hence the virtual elimination of resonance. Rounded edges on all cabinet sides give freedom from problems of diffraction, and the flared port mouth allows good breathing at high volume levels. Taken together, the use of high mass solid wood and this attention to details in the construction provide sonic results far superior to what can be obtained using the typical 16 mm or 18 mm MDF construction adopted by most manufacturers. To complement the high standard of the Super Pavarotti's cabinet, excellent drive units are used. The crossover, acting at 2.3 kHz, uses best quality components, including very high saturation self-cementing inductors and close tolerance, non-polarizing capacitors. Quality internal cabling is used and the rear terminals are our own Opera 24-ct gold-plated solid brass connectors capable of accepting any kind of cable termination. An attractive solid hardwood plinth and solid brass cones are provided for each cabinet, whilst as an option a massive 3 cm thick marble plinth stand is available. Each loudspeaker is hand finished with no less than five lacquer coats which protect and enhance the beauty of the natural wood. Like all models in the Opera range, the Super Pavarotti is designed to combine musical accuracy with listening enjoyment. We recommend the use of a good quality amplifier to get the best results. Valve amplifiers of 12 watts and upwards, or solid-state amplifiers of between 30 an 80 watts will be most suitable. |
